The Lightning Network on the Bitcoin (BTC) blockchain is losing traction, leading to the emergence of alternative solutions like Spend the Bits on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). John Deaton, a lawyer representing XRP holders, has highlighted the poor performance of the Lightning Network in response to data shared by WhaleWire. The statistics reveal an 84% decrease in overall usage and a 15% decline in capacity over the past three months.
Compared to the entire supply of the Bitcoin network, the Lightning Network can now process just 5,000 Bitcoin units, accounting for only 0.00023%. This underwhelming performance raises concerns about Bitcoin's relevance as a payment protocol, prompting market experts to explore other innovative solutions like XRPL.
Spend the Bits, currently operating primarily in Canada, aims to offer a faster, more secure way to spend Bitcoin. With plans to expand to El Salvador and other regions, it aims to establish a strong presence in the cryptocurrency payments industry.
While Bitcoin has been instrumental in driving blockchain and crypto innovation, its dominance is being challenged by emerging players like XRPL. Native to the Ripple Labs ecosystem, XRPL specializes in facilitating cross-border and digital currency remittances. Although it does not intend to compete with Bitcoin directly, XRPL is expected to gain a significant share of the market in the long run.
