On Ethereum's All Core Developers Consensus (ACDC) Call #118, developers discussed potential timelines for the activation of the highly anticipated Ethereum Dencun upgrade. The upcoming testing mechanism, Devnet-9, will include two new Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). However, the chair of the ACDE calls, Tim Beiko, supposes that the Ethereum Cancun-Deneb (DenCun) upgrade might not be activated in 2023 as originally planned. If the developers do not launch Dencun on the public testnet before Devcon in November 2023, the update is most likely to be activated in 2024.
Previously, Beiko had recommended activating the Dencun upgrade on the following testnets in the following order: Holesky, Goerli, and Sepolia. The activation of the Dencun mainnet may be delayed and not occur this year as originally planned, citing the impact of the failed Holesky testnet launch. The Ethereum core developers are planning to relaunch Holesky on September 28, 2023, after its initial launch failed due to misconfiguration and minor bugs.
Ethereum Dencun is the most anticipated upgrade in 2023, with EIP 4844 and EIP 4788 upgrades crucial for the scaling and privacy of Ethereum dApps. The Devnet-9 launch scheduled for September 27, 2023, is a significant milestone for Q4, 2023's enhancements to Ethereum's consensus design. Parithosh Jayanthi, a DevOps Engineer at Ethereum Foundation, stated that the consensus team is almost ready to launch Devnet-9, even if not all clients are fully prepared.
